Surgeon Forgot Where Pacing Wires Were Placed: $5.5 Million Award To Maryland Family
Just before a Maryland woman underwent cardiac bypass surgery, a surgeon placed the typical pacing wires on her chest. These wires help the doctors regulate the patient’s heart during recovery and can be removed by either clipping them or pulling them off. However, the surgeon forgot where the wires were placed and how many were used. Six days after her surgery when a nurse pulled out the pacing wires, the patient began bleeding profusely, underwent emergency surgery and died. It was deemed by the jury that the surgeon was at fault and they awarded the decedent’s family $5.5 million. This case was prosecuted by a Maryland lawyer. At Shapiro, Cohen and Basinger, Ltd., we represent Illinois victims of medical malpractice and fight vigorously for our clients to help achieve justice in egregious cases such as this one.
